Bluegrass NOW
Who We Are
We are the Bluegrass Chapter of the National Organization for Women, the largest feminist organization in the U.S., started in 1966. Est. 1987 and based in Lexington, KY, Bluegrass NOW is a diverse group of hundreds of women and men who believe that we, and our sisters, daughters, and mothers, should be equal under the law, including the choice of whether and when to bear children. We fight for a variety of issues including but not limited to: Abortion Rights/Reproductive Freedom, Constitutional Equality, Promoting Diversity, Ending Racism, Lesbian and Gay Rights, Economic Justice for Women, and Ending Violence Against Women. We are an all-volunteer organization and are dedicated to seeing that women are better represented in America's legislatures, businesses, and boardrooms. We support the principle that everyone should be equal under the law. "Definition: A feminist is a person who believes that women should have political, economic and social rights equal to those of men." Pay Equity Day April 20, 2010
Nationally women earn 77 cents compared to every dollar a man earns. Kentucky women earn only 74 cents. Pay Equity day is designated April 20th symbolizing how far into the year women have to work before our earnings are comparable to the earnings of men. What you can do:
- - Wear RED and encourage male and female friends to wear RED to symbolize women are still in the red on pay equity.
- - Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.
- - Call and/or write to your state legislators, Congressman, and Senators.
- - Ask local business to give 23% off to female customers on Pay Equity Day, April 20th.
- - Ask a local bookstore to host an 'unhappy' hour.
